FinOps: Pay only for the cloud you actually use

Cloud cost optimization with FinOps: right-sizing, reservations, auto-scaling, tagging, budget alerts, and cost governance.

What is Cloud cost optimization (FinOps)?

The cloud offers flexibility and scale, but without cost governance that flexibility becomes uncontrolled spending. Oversized resources, forgotten instances in development environments, lack of reservations for predictable loads, orphaned storage, and lack of visibility into who spends what are common issues that raise the cloud bill far above what is necessary. FinOps is the discipline that combines engineering, finance, and business to optimize cloud use on an ongoing basis. At Q2BSTUDIO we implement FinOps practices in Azure and AWS environments.

The first step is to gain visibility: to know how much each team, project, environment, and service spends. We set up consistent tagging across resources, cost dashboards per dimension, budget alerts, and periodic reports that bring spend information to decision-makers. Without visibility, no optimization is possible.

Right-sizing adjusts resource sizing to its actual usage: if a VM uses 10% of its CPU on average, it can probably be scaled down to a smaller size with no impact on performance. We analyze usage metrics, identify oversized resources and propose adjustments with an estimated impact on cost.

Reservations and savings plans allow you to commit capacity for one or three years in exchange for significant discounts (up to 72% in Azure, similar in AWS). We identify predictable and stable loads and calculate which reserves generate net savings without making commitments that are then not used.

Autoscaling avoids paying for capacity you don't need during off-peak hours: scale to zero in development environments at night and weekends, autoscaling in production based on actual demand, and scheduled shutdown of non-productive resources.

Orphaned resources (disks without VMs, unallocated public IPs, old snapshots, forgotten test environments) are identified and removed with team review and approval. We do not delete anything without verification.

Cost governance is implemented with policies: Azure Policy or AWS Config to prevent the creation of resources outside of size, region, or tagging standards; budgets with threshold alerts; and periodic cost reviews per team or project.

FinOps is not a one-off project: it is a continuous cycle of reporting, optimizing, and operating. We implement the review cadence, responsible roles, and processes so that the culture of financial responsibility is maintained over time, not just when a surprise invoice arrives.

We deliver cost dashboards, savings opportunities report, prioritized implementation plan and team training so that optimization is sustainable.

FinOps also helps make informed product decisions: when you know how much it costs to run each feature, you can prioritize development, negotiate prices with customers, and decide what to scale financially, not just technically. Cost transparency transforms the relationship between the technical team and the cloud bill.
