SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Desktop software tailored to your business

Cross-platform desktop applications with native performance, local hardware access, offline mode, and auto-update.

What is Desktop Software?

Although the general trend is towards the cloud, many business processes require desktop applications that work directly on the user's computer: local performance without network dependency, direct access to hardware such as printers, scanners, industrial devices or card readers, handling of large files, local data processing due to confidentiality or regulatory requirements, and integration with legacy systems that only expose local interfaces. At Q2BSTUDIO we develop custom desktop software for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Development is approached with technologies that enable cross-platform applications without sacrificing experience: Electron for web-based applications that need file system access, hardware, and native APIs; .NET with WPF or MAUI for the Microsoft ecosystem with native performance on Windows; o Qt and Tauri for lightweight, high-performance applications. We choose the most appropriate technology based on performance requirements, target platforms, hardware integration, and end-user profile.

The interface design follows the patterns of the target operating system to make the user feel like they are in a familiar environment: menus, keyboard shortcuts, native dialogs, window management, and accessibility. If the application is cross-platform, we adapt the experience to the conventions of each OS without forcing a generic design.

Common functionalities include file and document management, local data processing, connection to peripherals and hardware, advanced printing, synchronization with central server when connected, local or corporate directory authentication, data encryption on disk, and automatic update without user intervention.

The distribution is managed with signed installers for each platform: MSI or MSIX for Windows, DMG for macOS, and packages for Linux distributions. We set up auto-updater so that the app downloads and installs new versions without the user having to manually search for downloads. If the organization needs centralized distribution via GPO, SCCM or other management system, we prepare the right package.

Securing a desktop application involves protecting data on disk, managing access permissions, encrypting communications with the server, and verifying the integrity of updates. We sign executables to avoid OS security alerts and ensure that the software has not been tampered with.

Maintenance includes adaptation to new versions of the operating system, bug fixes, new functionalities according to roadmap and monitoring of errors in production through consented crash telemetry. We offer ongoing support so that the application remains functional and secure over time.

If the project requires the desktop application to coexist with a web or mobile version, we design the architecture to share business logic and synchronize data between platforms consistently.

The accessibility of the interface follows the operating system's standards: keyboard navigation, support for screen readers, adequate contrast, and adjustable text sizes to ensure that the app is usable by as many people as possible.
