Modernize your legacy software without losing what works

Analysis, planning and execution of the modernization of obsolete software: progressive migration, refactoring, rewriting and controlled coexistence.

What is Legacy Software Modernization?

Legacy software is a system that is still critical to the business but has been built with obsolete technologies, does not have adequate documentation, depends on specific people for its maintenance and each change poses a disproportionate risk. Modernizing it does not mean throwing it away and starting from scratch; It means planning for a transition that preserves functionality, data, and accumulated knowledge while upgrading technology, architecture, and maintainability. At Q2BSTUDIO we approach legacy software modernization with a progressive and controlled approach.

The first step is a thorough analysis of the current system: what it does, what depends on it, which parts are critical, which are obsolete but do not generate risk, what is the accumulated technical debt, what integrations exist and what is the real cost of keeping the system as it is. This diagnosis includes interviews with the team operating the system, analysis of the source code, mapping of dependencies and evaluation of the infrastructure.

Based on the diagnosis, we define the modernization strategy. There is no one-size-fits-all approach; Options range from rehosting (moving to the cloud without changing code), replatforming (adapting for managed services), refactoring (restructuring code while maintaining functionality), rearchitecting (redesigning key components) to complete rewriting. Most projects combine several strategies depending on the component. We prioritize by risk, impact, and cost to realize value from the early stages.

The execution is done progressively: we never cut the old system at once. We implemented a strangler fig pattern where the new system coexists with the legacy system, assuming functionalities one by one until the old one can be removed. Each migrated module is validated with automated testing and comparison of results before going into production.

Data migration is one of the most delicate aspects: old data schemas, inconsistent formats, orphaned data, and dependencies that are only discovered when trying to move. We plan the migration with detailed mapping, transformation, cleanup, and validation, and execute it with rollback available at each stage.

The team that operates the system is part of the process: we document the current behavior before changing it, involve users in validation, and provide training on the new tools. A modernized system that the team doesn't understand isn't a success.

The target technologies depend on the case: updated .NET, Node.js, React, Next.js, containers, cloud, REST APIs and managed databases are the most common. We choose the stack that best fits the client's team, roadmap and infrastructure.

We deliver technical documentation of the modernized system, operation guides, automated tests and continuous support for the post-migration phases.

Legacy system security is reviewed during diagnosis: dependencies with known vulnerabilities, uncontrolled access, unencrypted data, and outdated configurations are documented and addressed as part of modernization, not as a separate task later.
